DENR PALAWAN CONDUCTS LEARNING INTERVENTION FOR THE IEC UNIT AND INFORMATION OFFICERS
The Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Unit of PENRO and Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center (PWRCC), together with the CENROs Information Officers, underwent a 2-day training activity on October 23-24, 2024.

The first day of the program started at around 9:00 AM with registration of the participants. It was officially opened by the Chief TSD Ronie Gandeza who warmly welcomed the participants and the resource speaker. A total of twenty-seven (27) participants (16 female and 11 male) joined the training with one onboard via Zoom—participants from CENRO Coron. The first topics of the day were about photography and video production discussed by Herson Y. Caliao. During the morning session, topics about the basics of photography were discussed by Mr. Herson Y. Caliao, who tackled the three elements of exposure and the ISO operating procedures and gave tips for the beginners. In line with the Video Production, he highlighted in the discussions the importance of understanding the equipment used in producing a quality video. In the afternoon, the participants went to the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center (PWRCC) to do the practical exercises and apply what they learned during the discussions.
On October 24, 2024, Lara Grace Palay, a Public Information Officer from Western Philippine University provided lectures during the morning session on News Writing. She highlighted the difference between the commercial media and government agencies and the importance of the elements of news to create a compelling and more engaging article. After the interactive discussion, the participants were grouped by three (3) to create news articles regarding the conduct of the training.
The lecture was followed by another presentation given by Cheryl J. Adorna about Event Management, a Tourism Adviser at PNS and an Event Management Services NC II holder. She highlighted in her presentation what skills and knowledge are necessary to design, organize, and execute flawless events. Objectives of her discussion are as follows: understand the fundamentals of event planning, develop skills for managing timelines, budgets, and teams, learn to create engaging experiences for attendees, and master crisis management and problem-solving during events. Following the discussion was a group activity where the participants were divided into five groups and engaged in actoral event planning and actoral hosting.
The two-day training was concluded with closing remarks delivered by PENRO Felizardo B. Cayatoc. The PENRO expressed his appreciation to the participants in accepting the call of responsibility in ensuring the quality of the produced IEC materials for the community and his appreciation to the speakers who gave their expertise, time, and effort in upskilling the information officers of DENR Palawan.
Information, Education, and Communication play an important role in community development. It serves as a platform to disseminate information, educate, and raise awareness among the people about various issues and topics that can directly affect the community. The IEC Unit of DENR plays a pivotal role in the community as it encompasses a wide range of activities aimed at empowering the communities with information and awareness about the critical issues related to our environment.
